Bellingham Sister Cities Association has had a fabulous and busy year. At the board retreat this last Saturday, the BSCA advisory board reviewed all of the exciting activities we’ve all participated in during 2011, and they want to share that list with you, the membership.

Take a look at all you’ve helped to accomplish in 2011!

Now, as BSCA looks forward to 2012, you should know about some opportunities for you to get more involved.

1. BSCA has board openings! Why not consider joining the fun? The BSCA board meets on the third Tuesday of each month at City Hall. If you’re interested in applying to be on the board, download this application, fill it out, and put in the mail. The board votes on new applications each month.

2. Save the date: The 2012 BSCA Annual Meeting will take place on Thursday, February 23. Check back here for details regarding time and location.

3. Ski to Sea is around the corner and BSCA will be putting together teams again. If you’re available to help with organizing, home-hosting, transporting athletes, or in any other way, send a note to sistercityross@comcast.net.

Thanks for all you’ve done to promote people to people diplomacy around the world!

International Athletes to Compete in Ski to Sea 2011 Because of You

The world famous Ski to Sea Race is celebrating 100 years since the initiation of America’s original adventure race, the Mt. Baker Marathon in 1911.

With great enthusiasm, Bellingham Sister Cities Association (BSCA) is teaming up with Whatcom Events, host of the Ski to Sea Race, raising funds to assist an athlete from each of our seven sister cities with travel costs to reach Bellingham and join an international team for this exciting milestone in Ski to Sea history.

Bringing together an international team to compete in this year’s Race not only strengthens Bellingham’s relationships with our sister cities but also allows for the initiation or strengthening of ties between our international friends. Picture this: a Finnish cross country skier hands off the baton to a Korean downhill skier who hands off to a Mongolian runner then handing off to a Chilean bicyclist….and so on until reaching the Australian kayaker traversing Bellingham Bay to cross the finish line and celebrate a truly global team effort in Fairhaven!

In order to make this effort a success, we need your help! Whatcom Events/BSCA is raising approximately $12,000 to purchase a plane ticket for an athlete from each of our sister cities to join us in Bellingham/Whatcom County for the big Race this Memorial Day weekend.

Saturna Capital, a long time and incredibly generous supporter of BSCA has agreed to match all donations, dollar for dollar, up to a total of $5,500 to kick start our fundraising efforts (almost halfway there with your support!). Please join us in contributing to this global effort in promoting international teamwork through friendly competition!

To make a donation, please send a check made payable to:

Whatcom Events Sister City Fund, PO Box 2011, Bellingham, WA 98227

Whether a $5 donation or $500, all donors will be recognized on a special page of the Whatcom Events/Ski to Sea website and be invited to meet the athletes on Saturday evening, May 28th at the Depot Market Square.

Whatcom Events is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

Thank you for your support,
